What fire extinguishers does your business need?

Commercial premises and offices often have very different fire extinguisher requirements. Fires are caused by a wide range of reasons, and the combustible materials they spread from will be very different. If you run a commercial warehouse or distribution centre with a wide range of materials a range of fire extinguishers may be required:

  • Water – Used for solids only, such as wood, paper, plastics and fabrics.
  • Foam – Foam fire extinguishers can be used on a wider range of materials such as solids and class b fires. They work by releasing a layer or film on the surface which is burning, smothering the fire by removing the oxygen.
  • Dry powder – Dry powder or dry chemical fire extinguishers can be used on a variety of fire types including A, B and C class fires. They work by causing a chemical reaction with the fire causing the particles to expand and smother the fire. For this reason, they may not be suitable sensitive electrical components that may come into contact with the extinguisher chemicals.
  • L2 – These are specialist extinguishers designed to combat combustible metals, such as aluminium, magnesium and other flammable metals in a swarf or powder state.
  • Carbon Dioxide – CO2 based fire extinguishers are used for sensitive electrical equipment. They are not used for solids as they do not cool the combusting material, merely remove the oxygen.
  • Wet chemical – These extinguishers are primarily used in catering and cooking applications for oil and fat fires.
  • Water mist – By releasing a fine mist curtain, the fire is deprived of oxygen and is extinguished. Suitable for a wide range of applications, the demineralised water mist causes minimal secondary damage.
